The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) is the organisation that makes sure all health professionals in Australia are qualified, safe, and follow high standards of care. AHPRA works with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) to handle nurse registration, approve training programs, set professional rules, and review complaints.

For internationally qualified nurses, AHPRA is very important because it manages the Outcome-Based Assessment (OBA) pathway, which includes the Self-Check, NCLEX-RN, and OSCE. Registering with AHPRA is the first step to becoming a nurse in Australia.

Step 1: Self-Check

Start with the AHPRA Self-Check to know your pathway — either:

IQRN Pathway if you’re from a comparable country, or OBA Pathway

Step 2: English Test

Take an approved English test (IELTS, PTE, and OET)

Step 3: Create AHPRA Account

Create your Ahpra IQNM Portal account and start your Portfolio by uploading your documents.

Step 4: Verify Your Credentials

Some nurses must do Primary Source Verification (PSV) through EPIC to confirm their nursing qualifications.

Step 5: Complete Your Pathway

If IQRN Pathway: Submit documents for AHPRA assessment.

If OBA Pathway:

Pass the NCLEX-RN (MCQ) exam.

Pass the OSCE exam in Adelaide or Melbourne.

Step 6: AHPRA Decision

Once approved, AHPRA will confirm your eligibility and registration as a Registered Nurse in Australia.

The OBA is a two-stage assessment process: a multiple-choice question exam (MCQ) and an objective structured clinical exam. IQNMs must pass the first stage before moving to the next stage. Stage one is a cognitive assessment, which is a computer-based MCQ exam. IQNMs must pass the exam to move to part two of the OBA.
